Understanding model pricing
FP8 vs BF16 precision
When choosing models, you may see different precision options that affect both price and performance.- BF16 (16-bit)
- FP8 (8-bit)
Brain Floating Point 16-bit is the precision level at which models are typically trained.
- Best precision and accuracy - Ideal for tasks where quality is critical
- Suitable for: Medical diagnostics, scientific research, applications requiring high accuracy
- Trade-off: Slightly higher cost
Base vs Instruct models
- Base Models
- Instruct Models
Foundation models trained on broad data. They’re versatile and can be adapted to many tasks but require more prompt engineering.
- Flexible - Can be shaped for various use cases
- Requires guidance - You provide context and direction
For detailed model-specific pricing, see the Inference Quickstart guide.
